Suddenly, brownea!

Who would expect such a showy flower to shyly hang its face to the ground? I had to crawl under and take its picture in selfie mode. Now that it’s started flowering, I hope there’ll be many more.

The new leaves are very unusual too. We kept thinking they were flower buds, but now we know better.

Brownea coccinea, aka Scarlet flame bean or Rose of Venezuela. Well worth the six year wait!

  1. Thanks, Kajoli! That’s an interesting observation, and rings true. The other thing about trees that Shalini keeps reminding me is that slow growing ones like ours are putting down deep roots and will live long. Tree time is not to be reckoned by human years.
